With the release of the new series 1899 on Netflix this week it got me thinking. There needs to be more shows like this.

Obscure mystery shows with a scifi twist that always raise more questions than answers?

No … though they can be fun when done right.

1899 is a series create by Jantje Frise and Baran bo Odar both of who created the previous cult favourite time travel mystery for Netflix Dark. The series takes place on the steamship Kerberos transporting immigrants from Europe to New York in 1899 (who’d have guessed) when they find the previously missing ship Prometheus that was lost at sea.

The series itself is not the reason I’m saying Netflix needs more shows like this because it’s the cast.

1899 has a truly international cast with English, German, Spanish, French, Polish and Chinese performers all of who spend most of the show speaking in their national language as well as giving multilingual performances. Yes, this may put of some of you who have an aversion to subtitles but this really does show the scape of what Netflix can do with their worldwide productions.

Yes, most reading this will be familiar with their US productions (the Strangers Things theme will forever follow us) but they have spread to British, European, Spanish, Indian, Chinese and South Korean productions.

With the talent available to Netflix and as their standing as one of the biggest streaming companies I feel they need to expand and allow for more shows to take advantage of the talented creative minds and the performers available.

Though on another note they are kind of having a laugh with adding adverts …
